The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has achieved exceptional results in the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS ) World University Rankings by Subject. HKU boasts four subjects in the top 10 globally, with Dentistry and Education ranking 2nd and 3rd respectively, and Linguistics and Geography securing the 9th and 10th positions. In terms of local rankings, HKU leads in 33 out of 50 subjects, accounting for two-thirds of the 50 HKU subjects ranked.
Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, remarked on this achievement: “The commendable global standing of our subjects is a reflection of HKU's commitment to academic rigour and the pursuit of innovation and knowledge . This accomplishment is a collective endeavour, attributable to our distinguished faculty and diligent students. As HKU charts its trajectory into the future, we remain steadfast in our dedication to setting a high benchmark in education and research, contributing to the evolution of various disciplines and effecting positive change on both a local and global scale."
Out of the 50 HKU subjects ranked, 39 rank among the global top 50, with 15 securing places in the top 20. These include Dentistry (2nd), Education (3rd), Linguistics (9th), Geography (10th), Social Policy and Administration (11th), History of Art (12th), Architecture and Built Environment (13th), Civil and Structural Engineering (13th), Law (15th), Modern Languages (17th), Sociology (17th), English Language and Literature (17th), Marketing (17th), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (18th), and Library and Information Management (19th).
The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject evaluates universities based on various indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, H-index, and international research networks.
